Historic Waterloo

Address: 42 King Street South
Year Built: Unknown, pre-1889

This two-storey buff brick (now painted orange) business block appears to be of significant age and may be among the older business blocks remaining in Waterloo, though not as old as the Commercial Block. From the late 1880s until 1893 it was Leon Snyder's tailor shop. In 1893 Jacob Doersam purchased the property from Simon Snyder and ran his cigar business (which eventually evolved into a book and stationery store) from this location until his death in 1912. Various relatives continued the business until 1961. Ed Bergman then purchased the building and operated a jewellery business in this location between 1961 and 1981.
