Historic Waterloo

Name: Waterloo Insurance Building
Address: 14 Erb Street West
Year Built: 1880, additions 1899, 1904, 1926–1929
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

This building has been the home of four insurance companies. In 1879, Mutual Life purchased land at the corner of Albert and Erb Streets for $725 and built a red brick building for $3,718. It was ready in time for the Tenth Annual Meeting, which took place April 14, 1880. When Mutual Life moved to their new head office in 1912, Dominion Life moved to this location, which they occupied until 1954, when Canada Health and Accident moved in. In 1968 the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company moved in. This building was later the Waterloo detachment of the Waterloo Regional Police Service. Note the lion figures at the front of the building (an addition from the early 1900s) and the coal chutes on the side of the building. The pillars were added around 1950.
