Historic Waterloo

Name: Conrad Block
Address: 15 King Street North
Year Built: 1888
Architectural Styles: Italianate
Heritage Status: Listed

Conrad Block was originally the home of Conrad Hardware, owned by Jacob Conrad and, later, by his sons. Conrad purchased the property in the 1860s, when the building currently on the site was a small two-storey building, similar to neighbouring 13 King Street North. In 1888 that building was demolished and the present one was built. In addition to owning a hardware store, Jacob Conrad was a one-term mayor of Waterloo (1887) and was the father-in-law of artist Woldemar Neufeld. The building is a three-storey brick building, painted various colours in recent years, most recently grey. Note the segmentally arched windows with keystones, corbelled brickwork, and brackets.
