Historic Waterloo

Name: Waterloo's First Schoolhouse
Address: Waterloo Park
Year Built: 1820, relocated 1842, 1894, rebuilt 1971
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

Earliest and only log school house in Waterloo, originally located opposite where the current MacGregor Public School is located. Built in 1820, it served the community until a brick school was built in 1842. It was then moved to Berlin (now Kitchener), to what was then called the Greenbush, adjacent to where Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School is now. It was rented to a one-legged ex-slave from the United States (Levi Carroll), and later his descendants. In 1894, through the efforts of Isaac E. Bowman, the school house was purchased and moved to Waterloo Park. In its early days as a park facility it served as a refreshment stand and a place for bands to hold concerts. Students at Laurel Vocational School restored the building in 1972.
