Historic Waterloo

Address: 49 George Street
Year Built: ca. 1881–1884
Architectural Styles: Italianate
Heritage Status: Listed

This two-storey painted buff brick house was built for Julius Germann, who owned and operated a harness and saddle shop, and who was the owner of the Market Hotel between 1889 and 1906. Germann sold this house in 1901 to Levi Stauffer, first president and a founder of North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The house exhibits a high degree of craftsmanship; note, for instance, the shutters, the brackets under the eaves and the keystones in the arch above the windows.
